(Huntsville, Arkansas) What started as a shared vision has become a place where families gather, kids play, and the community comes to life in a whole new way. Located in the heart of Huntsville, College Street Park has served as a central gathering place, just steps away from the local senior center, library, and school. The convenient location has made it a natural hub for residents of all ages, and now, thanks to recent improvements, it’s even more inviting.
The park was originally developed with financial support from the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism through the FUN Park Grant program, laying the groundwork for a wonderful city park. In 2023, through a collaborative effort between Madison County and the City of Huntsville, ownership of the park was transferred to the city.
This transition reflected a shared commitment to the park’s future, with both entities recognizing the opportunity to enhance and expand the space to better serve the community. With local leadership in place, the city set out to build on that foundation and continue improving the park as a destination for residents and visitors alike.
As part of the planning process, city leaders made sure the community had a voice in shaping the park’s future. Through a local survey, residents shared overwhelming support for adding a splash pad, something that would provide fun, accessible recreation for families, especially during the summer months.
The city listened and acted. With a clear vision and strong community backing, the city partnered with the Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District (NWAEDD) to pursue funding. In 2023, NWAEDD assisted in preparing and submitting a competitive application for a Matching Grant through the Outdoor Recreation Grants Program.
That effort paid off. In 2024, the city was awarded a $225,000 grant to bring the project to life. With funding secured, the project moved forward. NWAEDD continued to support the city through grant administration, helping navigate requirements and keep the project on track. Construction was completed this past winter, delivering exciting new amenities including a splash pad and new restroom facilities, enhancements that are already making a big impact for park visitors. The City matched the grant investment dollar-for-dollar, demonstrating a strong local commitment to improving community spaces.
The work hasn’t stopped there. The City is already moving ahead, with construction to expand parking and improve access to ensure the park remains welcoming and accessible as its popularity continues to grow.
This project demonstrates how collaboration and community input can turn a vision into reality. From initial ideas to final construction, each step reflects a shared commitment to enhancing quality of life through outdoor recreation, a vision shared by the City of Huntsville, NWAEDD, and the Arkansas Office of Outdoor Recreation.
