Bergman, Arkansas - The Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District (NWAEDD) is pleased to highlight the successful completion of the City of Bergman’s new community safe room—an important public‑safety investment made possible through strategic grant support.
In the spring of 2023, Mayor Danny Farmer contacted NWAEDD seeking assistance in identifying funding options to enhance emergency protection for Bergman residents. NWAEDD Community Development Coordinator Tina Cole worked closely with the city leaders to develop and submit a competitive application to the Arkansas Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Through this collaboration, Bergman was awarded $84,412 in mitigation funding. The City of Bergman also received a Rural Community Grant totaling $13,515 and provided an equal match to fully fund the project. Construction began in the spring of 2025, with Atlas Safe Rooms overseeing the concrete slab installation and final buildout. The project was completed in the summer of 2025.
The new community safe room will be open to the public during severe weather emergencies and will serve as a designated protection area for residents seeking secure shelter during storms. “We are proud to partner with communities like Bergman to advance projects that directly enhance public safety,” said Tina Cole, NWAEDD Community Development Coordinator. “This safe room will serve as a vital resource during severe weather events, and we commend the city for its commitment to protecting residents.”
NWAEDD extends appreciation to the City of Bergman, the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management (ADEM), the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, Division of Rural Services (DRS), and all partners who contributed to the successful completion of this important project.
