Other Special Materials

What are
"Special Materials?"

Special Materials are those which typically require special disposal methods. They are not generally sent to the land fill, due either to regulation or the potential of contamination.

On these pages are descriptions of a number of common Special Materials, along with options for disposal in Northwest Arkansas.

Special Materials include:

  • Waste tires
  • Electronic Waste (E-Waste)
  • Waste Automotive Fluids
  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
  • White and Bulky Goods
  • Waste Batteries
  • Used Needles

Waste Tires

Northwest Arkansas has a progressive, highly successful waste tire management program. Waste tires are permanently baled and used for civil engineering projects such as dam impoundments, road beds, building foundations and more!

Lead Acid Batteries

Waste lead acid batteries such as those used in vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, tractors and equipment, etc.) are too valuable to throw away!  In most cases, they are turned in for exchange on the purchase of new batteries from any battery retailer. In the rare instance when you need to dispose of a lead acid battery and are not exchanging it in the purchase of a new one, any of the region's recycling centers, including public recycling centers and private recycling centers will take them at no charge.

Household and Electronics Batteries

These types of batteries should not be disposed in the household trash. Generally considered to be "Household Hazardous Waste" or Electronics Waste, they should be removed from the electronic device (cell phones, computers, and other devices) and disposed of at one of the region's recycling centers.
