The Greening of North Arkansas College

General Statement of Policy

The General Policy of the Board of Trustees regarding Sustainable Development at North Arkansas College is to establish a program of responsible environmental practices in all areas of the College’s operations. The Board of Trustees defines sustainability as the practice of balancing energy and resource usage with energy and resource conservation and development.

The College encourages the involvement and participation of all persons and departments, including administration, faculty, staff and students. The goal of this general policy is to achieve a neutral impact on the environment, and to help instill in students an understanding of the importance of responsible environmental stewardship, as well as a practical awareness of environmental goals and ideals and how they can be achieved.

In the following four areas of concern and focus, the Board of Trustees supports these policies and encourages their utilization and implementation to the highest degree possible, wherever practical and feasible, on all campuses.

Environmental (Soil and Water) –

  • To encourage the use of products, practices and methods which produce the least harmful impacts on the environment.

  • To encourage the replacement of toxic or contaminating products with organic or non-toxic products.

  • To encourage practices and activities which help balance or neutralize negative impacts which have been made in the past, or which cannot be fully mitigated in the future.

Energy and Carbon Emissions –

  • To encourage practices, methods and the use of products and materials which conserve energy and reduce or minimize the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

 Waste Resources –

  • To encourage the development and maintenance of a comprehensive perspective of waste as a valuable and renewable resource.

  • To encourage the implementation of practices which promote waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.

  • To encourage composting as a method of reuse and recycling.

  • To encourage the purchasing of items that have recyclable content.

 Communications and Education –

  • To encourage the establishment, assessment and monitoring of a continuing and evolving comprehensive program of Sustainable Development.

  • To utilize a variety of means to inform and educate all individuals within the sphere of this College and the Community about its sustainability programs, goals and methods and to promote those programs.

  • To involve the College’s administration, staff, faculty, students, and the community as the developers and beneficiaries of these educational opportunities.

The Board is committed to this General Policy, and encourages the administration, faculty, staff, and students, to strive to achieve the highest possible standard of Sustainable Development at North Arkansas College.  In so doing, we set a standard of excellence for our community and service area.
